The Queensland government has launched forfeiture proceedings against the owner of a once luxurious island resort in Hong Kong, now derelict and abandoned.
Double Island, about 30 minutes north of Cairns in Far North Queensland, was bought in 2012 by billionaire Benny Wu for $5.68 million.
A resort he built there once entertained the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Keanu Reeves, but has fallen into disrepair in the years since.

Double Island tenant Benny Wu has failed to meet the March 31 deadline for daytime facilities to be open to the public and for the resort to be operational
The state government appointed Mr. Wu an ultimatum to refurbish the resort, and a deadline of March 31.
That is now over, and last Monday, the Department of Resources told Fortune Island Holding Company that it would ask the Land Court to determine whether the island lease should be forfeited.
“Tenants of government-owned property must comply with the terms of their leases,” said Queensland Resources Minister Scott Stewart.
“If tenants fail to meet their obligations, we will not hesitate to take action to protect these islands and the interests of all Queensland residents.”

“I expected action to be taken against the Double Island tenant, so I welcome this important step in the beginning of the lease forfeiture process,” said Barron River member Craig Crawford.
‘Double Island used to be a jewel in Far North Queensland’s tourist crown but has been abandoned for too long so this news will be appreciated by the community.’
