Drivers risk losing their license for making just one simple mistake on the road as double penalties come into play this long weekend.

Residents of New South Wales, ACT and South Australia will enjoy the public holiday of Labor Day on Monday 3 October.

The holiday period means drivers will be subject to dual penalties on the road in NSW and ACT, but South Australia is not subject to dual penalties.

Double penalties apply for speeding, seat belts, motorcycle helmets, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and cell phone violations during the period.

Motorists caught using their phones while driving will be fined $457 and 10 penalty points.

Drivers lose six penalty points for driving without a seat belt and 12 points if two of their passengers travel without wearing their seat belts.

Double penalty points are automatically applied on weekends when the holiday falls on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.
