Don’t Worry Darling debuts at the top of box office with $19.2 million

Don’t Worry Darling topped the US box office last weekend, earning $19.2 million in his first big screen outing. The thriller, about a 1950s utopian desert community directed by Olivia Wilde, overcame bad reviews and rumors of behind-the-scenes troubles to come out on top, according to Box Office Mojo.

The debut is disappointing as the film, starring Wilde, Harry Styles, Florence Pugh and Chris Pine, cost $35 million to make.

The Woman King, starring Viola Davis, easily took second place. The historic epic, based on real events, with the Oscar winner taking the lead, ended with strong ticket sales of $11.1 million.

The Avatar reissue was a big winner for Walt Disney Pictures, taking $10 million at the box office and taking third place. The 2009 fantasy adventure will soon be followed by the highly anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, December 16.

Barbarian, a terrifying film about a woman who finds more than she bargained for after checking in to an Airbnb, came in fourth, unpacking $4.8 million. Ticket sales for the thriller starring Georgina Campbell and Justin Long fell 26 percent from its debut last week.

Coming in at number five was another haunted party, Pearl, with $1.91 million dollars. Mia Goth stars as the murderous character she played in X, and this prequel explains how Pearl got so handy with an axe.
