Canada’s number one player, Dayne St. Clair, was caught practicing the dark art of goalkeeping during his country’s penalty shootout loss to Uruguay in the Copa America.

St Clair was caught red-handed trying to hide the water bottle of his Uruguayan colleague Sergio Rochet, but was soon arrested.

During the penalty shootout, Rochet can be seen storming behind his goal just before Canada’s second penalty kick. He sees St Clair hiding his water bottle behind the advertising hoardings.

Commentators were quick to see the humor in St. Clair’s antics, but unfortunately for Canada’s number one, the referee did not and gave him a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct.

However, this is not the first time we have seen a water bottle play an important role during an international match this summer.

England number one Jordan Pickford was photographed holding a bottle with a cheat sheet printed on it, detailing all the ways the Swiss penalty takers would shoot. It would prove useful as England beat the Swiss to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2024.

The Reds had to settle for fourth place in the Copa America, while initially convinced they were on their way to third place, and tried to end the match 2-1.

However, an injury-time equaliser from Luis Suarez (90+2 min) forced extra time and eventually penalties.

Marco Bielsa’s Uruguay team won the shoot-out 4-3, thanks to goals from Rodrigo Bentancur and Suarez.

Canada had to settle for fourth place in their debut Copa after losing 3-4 on penalties to Uruguay.

Among the names missing from Jesse Marsch’s team were Canadians Alphonso Davies and Ismael Kone.

It is the first time that Canada has participated in the Copa America, a traditional South American competition.

However, in recent years the Copa organisers have been keen to increase its popularity and also include teams from North America.
