Harry Kane has admitted he is yet to reach his top form for England after coming under fire in his first two group games at Euro 2024. But he believes the Three Lions should not panic despite not ‘ play the way they wanted’.

Kane scored England’s only goal in Thursday’s weak 1-1 draw with Denmark but was taken off in the second half and replaced by Aston Villa frontman Ollie Watkins in a disappointing performance from one of the tournament favourites.

After being criticized for dropping deep and failing to stretch the defence, Kane admitted he had failed to hit top gear, but promised there was more to come.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, he said: ‘I try to stay away from it as much as possible, but it’s impossible not to see some things these days.

‘Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and when a major international tournament takes place, this is further reinforced.

‘If I’m honest, am I playing as well as I can? No.

‘But I didn’t score in the group stage at the World Cup in group, so I’m already one ahead. I don’t go too high or too low, I just move on to the next one.’

Despite the faltering start, in which England also took the lead against Serbia, Kane is convinced that Gareth Southgate’s team can achieve several positive points.

“If you had said before the tournament where we are now, that we had pretty much qualified after two games, we would have accepted that,” he added.

“We can be honest with ourselves that we didn’t play the way we wanted to play.

‘The good sign is that we have still achieved results.’
