Don’t look back! The Polestar 4 will be the first car on British roads without a rear window

  • The car will have a camera on the roof instead of a rear-view mirror
  • Polestar says the design will give drivers a better view of the road behind them

Peering over your shoulder to reverse into a tight space will soon be a thing of the past as the first car without a rear window will hit British roads.

The Swedish-made Polestar 4 will be equipped with a high-definition screen instead of a rear-view mirror, showing live images from a roof-mounted camera.

The Volvo-owned automaker says the new design will give drivers a better view of the road behind them, especially when driving at night.

The Polestar 4, which starts at £59,990 and is expected to hit the roads in August, will be the first to completely remove the glass rear window

The screen – still placed in its traditional spot above the dashboard – can also be turned off and used as a normal mirror, allowing the driver to see into the rear of the car

Jonathan Goodman, head of Polestar in Britain, said: ‘The visibility out the back of many cars is quite limited. Once you have a large passenger in the back or any luggage, you can’t see anything out of it at all. .

‘If you place a camera there, you as a driver have a much better field of view.’

The screen – still positioned in its traditional spot above the dashboard – can also be turned off and used as a normal mirror, allowing the driver to see into the rear of the car. The lack of a rear window allows the vehicle to be redesigned to provide more head and leg room. While other cars, including some electric BMWs, have cameras linked to the rear-view mirror, the Polestar 4, which starts at £59,990 and is expected to hit the roads in August, will be the first to completely remove the glass rear window.
