We love movie recommendations here at Polygon. Whether it’s horror, sci-fi, action, comedy, thrillers or just the best of the year, we always try to introduce readers to new and exciting films that they will love. But now we want to find the perfect movie for you. (That’s you.)
Starting this week, every Thursday on Polygon we’ll have an open thread dedicated to helping you, dear reader, find the perfect watch for this weekend. Looking for a science fiction that makes you think about the wonders (or horrors) of the world? We got you. Want to refresh your world cinema? We got you. How about some comfort food? We have you there too.
From 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM EST I’ll be in the comments section of this post, answering your questions and submitting requests about what to watch this weekend. We will continue this experiment every Thursday and we hope you will like it.
A little about me, your curator for this week: I’m Pete Volk, our senior curatorial editor. I love movies of all shapes and sizes, but my main areas of interest are action movies (especially martial arts), classic Hollywood comedies (shout out to the GOAT, Ernst Lubitsch), and keeping up with new releases from around the world (I have a good for 150 films watched from 2023 and eight from 2024 so far).
I’ll probably take a look this weekend The miracles on Disney Plus, because I think Iman Vellani was great Ms. Marvel but I missed the movie in theaters (and because I can only go against my completion instincts). I’m going to look at the new one too Wonderful in the dungeon and watch more Prime Videos Mr and Mrs Smith. If I have time, I’ll sneak in another 2023 catch-up film – the top contenders are American fiction (available to rent), Suzume (Crunchyroll), or the Tamil time-travel comedy Mark Anthony (on Prime).
Now it’s time to turn it around on you. What would you like to see (or what are you planning to watch) this weekend? Leave a request in the comments and I’ll get back to you between 3:30 PM and 5:30 PM EST. Details help – let me know what you’re looking for, what streaming services you have access to (and if you’re willing to rent), an idea of your tastes as a viewer, and any other relevant information you’d like to share. And yes, while this idea is focused on movies, I will take TV requests as well.
Some examples of good queries:
“I loved RRR, and want to expand my knowledge of Indian cinema. What should I watch next on Netflix? Ideally, another blockbuster with big musical numbers that mix genres, and bonus points for anti-colonialist themes.”
“I love action comedies, but there aren’t many that focus on female leads. I love Spy And The heat, but I’ve seen them both many times. What else can I watch in the same vein? I have Netflix and Prime, and would rather not rent, but for the right movie I might.”
See you in the comments at 3:30 PM EST! In the meantime, fire off your requests.
