You don’t want to install the latest iOS 15 update beta – it might break Face ID
>
Do not download the latest iOS 15 beta from Apple. That’s the warning from users who downloaded the iOS 15 update after Face ID reportedly stopped working for them.
People who use iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro models of smartphones have turned to social media to express their frustrations (opens in new tab), saying that after downloading the beta update, Face ID stopped working. Then when they went to reset Face ID to see if that would fix the problem, they got an error saying “Face ID is not available” (via MacRumors (opens in new tab)).
It’s not clear if other iPhones with Face ID (including the iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13, as well as their respective Pro and mini versions) are affected by the issue, but just to be safe, we’d recommend checking out for now. stay close to the latest iOS 15 beta.
Fortunately, if you are already suffering from this Face ID issue, there may be a solution. Some users who encountered the problem have said that downloading iOS 16 solved the problem.
Analysis: Why not just update to iOS 16?
If iOS 16 is available for download and installing it can fix this iOS 15 glitch, why not go for the latest software from Apple right away?
First, iOS 16 itself isn’t perfect yet, as is often the case with new software. Example: Some iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro users had problems with FaceTime and iMessage (core features of the phone) until Apple released a patch and fixed it. A previous bug also caused the iPhone’s camera to malfunction, again until Apple fixed it.
iOS 15, on the other hand, is now a pretty stable release, having been available for over a year now, so despite this latest issue, some users may want to hold out until Apple can fix the major issues with iOS 16.
Other users may not want to install the latest update for fear that it will degrade the performance of their iPhone.
Operating system updates are primarily designed with the latest hardware in mind, so they aren’t optimized as well for older devices. As such, people using older iPhones may find that their systems are slower after updating to the latest version of iOS.
Finally, there will be people who would love to take advantage of the new features of iOS 16, but their smartphones are just too old. Handsets like the iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, and original iPhone SE are all compatible with iOS 15, but didn’t make the cut for iOS 16 compatibility. As such, these users — who for some reason want to continue using their old phone — will rely on these updates to older iOS software to ensure their devices are safe.
Hopefully, Apple will fix this and all other iOS 15 issues before the update leaves beta, but don’t expect too many more iOS 15 updates after that — we wouldn’t be surprised if 15.7.1. Is the latest iOS 15 version unless a major problem occurs.
