Donnell Wallam has made a dream start as a Diamonds player after scoring a last minute winner to seal an opening test win over England in Newcastle.
Wallam, 28, was in the spotlight this week after expressing her discomfort with wearing the Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting brand logo, following controversial comments made by her late father in the 1980s.
Lang Hancock suggested that Indigenous Australians should be sterilized over the next few years to “incubate themselves.”
Wallam was supported by her teammates and Rinehart withdrew her company’s $15 million sponsorship deal with the team, endangering the very survival of Netball Australia.
The fiasco saw all eyes on Wallam in Newcastle on Wednesday night, with the 28-year-old named on the bench to face England in hopes of making her international debut.
Wallam came on the pitch in the fourth term to a huge ovation from the Newcastle crowd and there was a frenzy as she scored with her very first touch of the game.
But things got even better for Wallam, who scored an incredible layup in the closing seconds to take a one-point win for the Diamonds against their arch-rivals, setting off jubilant scenes in the arena.
