Donald Trump’s lead in swing state Michigan jumps to 7 points over Joe Biden after assassination attempt

Donald Trump’s lead over President Joe Biden in the crucial state of Michigan has increased by 4 percentage points after the assassination attempt, according to a new poll.

Before the Trump-Biden debate last month, the former president held a 4 percent lead in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup.

After Biden’s disastrous performance last month and Trump’s shooting at a rally in Pennsylvania last Saturday, Michigan voters are in a state of Detroit Free Press/EPIC-MRA Poll now 7 percent prefer the former president.

Trump held his first rally since the assassination attempt in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was indoors, which is atypical for a Trump rally, but security had more controlled entry points.

The meeting was also the first after Trump became the official Republican Party nominee in 2024 at the Republican Party convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A new poll shows Trump widening his lead over President Joe Biden in the swing state of Michigan by 4 percent

Biden turned Michigan blue in 2020, beating Trump by 2.8 percent, after the Republican won the state by just 0.3 percent in 2016.

When third-party candidates were considered among Michigan’s 600 likely voters, the five-way race found Trump leading by the same seven-point margin: 43 percent to 36 percent.

The pre-debate poll, which also included third-party frontrunners, showed Trump still with a narrow 3 percent lead: 41 percent to 38 percent.

Strikingly, the former president holds a lead in every region of the swing state, including the deep blue city of Detroit and surrounding areas.

This is probably the most important indicator that political power in the 2024 race has shifted in Biden’s favor, as Democrats are calling en masse for him to step aside.

Trump held his first post-nomination rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Saturday, July 20 — exactly one week after he was shot in an assassination attempt at his event in Butler, Pennsylvania

Despite his narrow lead, Trump holds a 46 percent to 44 percent lead in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties, the latest poll shows.

In this region, Biden defeated Trump in 2020 by 56 percent to 40 percent.

Biden’s terrible poll numbers are likely playing a role in the president’s consideration of his next steps, according to EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn.

“It’s just going to increase the pressure on Biden to step aside and let someone else take his place,” said one Lansing pollster. “The Democrats are in a tough spot.”
