Donald Trump should split Greenland with Putin, says Russian parliament as he calls on Moscow to also take Norwegian Arctic island
Vladimir Putin could find himself competing with Donald Trump for control of Greenland and could share the world’s largest island with the US, a Russian general has said.
The Kremlin should also capture Spitsbergen, a Norwegian island in the Arctic where military operations are banned, and use it as a defensive stronghold.
The demands came from Reservist General Andrei Gurulev, a hardline pro-Putin lawmaker and TV propagandist for the Kremlin regime.
“For example, if Trump makes his claims in Greenland, why don’t we look at Greenland?”
Ice-covered Greenland is an autonomous territory that is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but the incoming US president has said he hopes to buy it for the United States.
‘We need Greenland. This is not a joke,” Lieutenant General Gurulev emphasized.
‘We really need it.
“Why can’t we take a few boxes filled (with money) and close this issue once and for all?

“Worst-case scenario, Trump could agree to divide Greenland into two parts.
“It’s clear that Denmark will never be there again.”
He also set his sights on Spitsbergen, a sovereign Norwegian territory but where Russia exercises rights under the 1920 Svalbard Treaty to engage in economic activities such as mining.
There is a Russian consulate on the Arctic island of Barentszburg, the northernmost diplomatic mission in the world.
The island has been demilitarized under an international agreement.
Gurulev says Russia must undo this.
“Today Spitsbergen, which is in the underbelly of our Northern Fleet, is extremely important for us,” he said in a TV propaganda program.
“I think we need to move from joint development to Russian options, and there will be very good bases there that will affect the entire Arctic….

“The most important thing for us is to build a normal defense system there, in such a way that no one would even think of poking their nose into our Arctic regions.”
He said on his Telegram channel that “it is important for us to strengthen our positions on Spitsbergen, which is close to the Northern Fleet.
“Instead of joint development, we should move to Russian control, creating bases that affect the entire Arctic.
“Military forces in the Arctic must be built up, without being distracted only by the situation in Ukraine.”
