President-elect Donald Trump has officially tapped Elon Musk to “dismantle” America’s bloated $6.5 trillion bureaucracy by heading the newly created Department of Government Efficiency.
Trump made the bombshell announcement Tuesday evening, saying Musk will lead the “Manhattan Project of our time” with former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.
“This will send shockwaves through the system, and through everyone involved in government waste, which is a lot of people!” Musk said this in a statement.
Republicans have long complained about government overspending and Trump touted that DOGE will achieve its goals by July 4, 2026.
Trump promised the pair would help him “dismantle” the government bureaucracy and “cut excessive regulations, reduce wasteful spending and restructure federal agencies.”

Ramaswamy started the 2024 election cycle by running for president but continued to compliment the ex-president.
Unlike candidates like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and former Rep. Will Hurd, who were decidedly anti-Trump during the 2024 Republican primaries, Ramaswamy praised the 78-year-old’s performance in office .
When Trump appeared to be the runaway favorite ahead of the early primaries, Ramaswamy never turned on the former president, as did Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the former UN ambassador. Nikki Haley, giving him a comfortable place to land in the Trump 2.0 White House.
Ramaswamy finished in fourth place in the Iowa caucuses, suspending his campaign immediately afterwards and endorsing Trump.
Both Musk and Ramaswamy are billionaires, but Musk’s net worth is estimated at $304 billion and Ramaswamy is only worth $1 billion.
“Republican politicians have long dreamed about the goals of ‘DOGE,’” Trump said. “To achieve these types of dramatic changes, the Department of Government Efficiency will provide advice and guidance from outside the government, and work with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to achieve large-scale structural reforms and create an entrepreneurial approach to government which has never been seen before.’
Musk responded to the news by posting on X: “The merch will be” and then typed three fire emojis.
