Former United States President Donald Trump was spotted chatting with McLaren driver Lando Norris shortly after his first-ever Grand Prix victory in Miami.

Images show the former president and current Republican Party frontrunner wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat and talking to the driver.

It’s not clear exactly what Trump said to Norris, but earlier in the day the 45th president was spotted touring the McLaren garage and speaking with team CEO Zak Brown.

A statement from McLaren read: “McLaren is a non-political organization, but we recognize and respect the office of President of the United States, so when the request was made to visit our garage on race day, we accepted along with the president of the FIA and the CEOs of Liberty Media and Formula 1.

“We were honored that McLaren Racing was chosen to represent F1, giving us the opportunity to showcase the world-class engineering we bring to motorsport.”

Trump’s appearance at the Miami Grand Prix comes after organizers halted his plans for a fundraiser because he violated the terms of his hospitality suite agreement by planning to raise money for a federal election.

The ex-president’s friend, Steven Witkoff, who recently testified on Trump’s behalf in New York, purchased the suite in his name for fundraising purposes.

‘It has come to our attention that you may be using your Paddock Club Rooftop Suite for a political purpose, namely raising money for a federal election at $250,000 per ticket, in clear violation of the Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami License Agreement Grand Prix suite, ‘Read a cease and desist letter.

‘If this is true, we regret to inform you that your suite license will be revoked, you will not be allowed to attend the race at any time and we will refund you the full amount.’

Race officials did not comment publicly on the story, with Witkoff telling the New York Post that “this is definitely fake” but declining to comment further.

As for the race itself, Lando Norris employed a perfectly executed race strategy, including a well-timed pit stop while the safety car went out for fresh hard tires.

This allowed him to build a lead over Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, who finished second, just 7.6 seconds behind Norris.

It is the first time that Norris has won a Formula 1 race – a maiden victory that he hopes will be the first of many.
