Donald Trump assassination attempt live updates: The key unanswered question from the shooting

By Katelyn Caralle, Senior U.S. Political Reporter

As multiple investigations continue into the second attempted assassination of Donald Trump in just two months, one key question remains unanswered: How did the shooter know the former president was golfing?

It’s no surprise that Trump, an avid golfer, was at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday.

But it has sparked surprise that the shooter knew where and when the 2024 Republican presidential candidate would be.

Police have taken 58-year-old Wesley Ryan Routh into custody after he fled the scene Sunday after a Secret Service agent opened fire when they saw the barrel of his AK-47-style rifle sticking out of the brush at Trump International Golf Club.

Some analysts note that it is clear when Trump is at his golf club, which is just five miles from his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach. The president will travel to the course in a motorcade, and security has been greatly increased when he is on site.

Routh moved from North Carolina to Hawaii a few years ago and is a construction worker.

It’s unclear how long Routh was in Florida before he headed to Trump’s golf course with a rifle, backpack, GoPro camera and ceramic bulletproof vest, all of which he left behind when he fled security gunfire.
