William Baldwin reflects on the life and career of a Hollywood original, Donald Sutherland, following his death on Thursday, June 20, after a long illness at the age of 88.

After playing his on-screen son Patrick Darling IV for two seasons on Dirty Sexy Money, Baldwin said it turned out to be “by far my favorite” of the three.

“Donald was a complex, complicated and idiosyncratic man in the most delightful way,” he said in the statement about X. “He had a gentle, childish boyish character about him that I absolutely adored. His on-screen personality and his life personality were as interesting and original as the features on his face.”

‘He was a true original. One of a kind,” Baldwin continued. ‘I’ve never known anyone like him. His many incredible qualities and somehow even his flaws made him more unique, more charming… more likeable.”

Baldwin then told a story about how Sutherland’s love and passion for his craft shone through until the end.

It happened shortly after a table read for Dirty Sexy Money, when Sutherland had a big smile on his face and “a bounce in his step.”

‘[He] said to me… “Look here… read this.” He then handed me his script and I read a scene with a lot of snappy, brilliant dialogue,” the Forgetting Sarah Marshall star explained. ‘He said to me… “Can you believe that? Can you believe I can say that… how wonderful.” It was so sweet and exciting for me to see how excited he still was about work [then] at the age of 73.’

Baldwin then talked about an intimate moment he shared with his friend and colleague that has since left a lasting impact on him.

“We became so close during our two seasons together that he once said to me, ‘I have affection for you as if you were one of my sons.’ That meant the world to me and I will never forget that,” he revealed.

Sutherland is survived by five children, including his 24-year-old and Designated Survivor actor son Kiefer Sutherland, who took to his Instagram page to share the sad news of his father’s death.

“It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,” the 57-year-old wrote, with clear emotion accompanying his words. ‘Personally, I think he is one of the most important actors in film history. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and you can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.’

Along with his five children, Sutherland is also survived by his wife and actress Francine Racette, whom he married in 1972, and five grandchildren.
