Don Lemon pulls out of Black History Month event in NYC after ‘sexist’ comments

Don Lemon has pulled out of hosting a Black History Month event after his ‘sexist’ comments about Nikki Haley landed him in trouble.

The CNN anchor was scheduled to host an event in New York today on “race and real estate” in honor of Black History Month.

But he walked away from work, after not appearing on This Morning for three days after he made comments about Republican Nikki Haley, 51, being past her prime.

The 56-year-old was ‘worried’ his comments would take over the event, according to TMZand has been replaced by John Gomes.

Gomes works for Douglas Elliman, a real estate company that organized the event.

Lemon is expected to return to the screens from Wednesday after undergoing a formal workout following a series of problematic comments on the air.

CNN President Chris Licht, who has criticized Lemon’s comments, sent a memo to employees Monday saying Lemon agreed to participate in the training and would return Wednesday, according to former anchor Brian Stelter.

Lemon was seen swimming and frolicking on the beach hours after joining a CNN editorial call from Miami on Friday where he apologized to staff for his comments.

According to a memo sent to employees Monday, Licht said: “I sat down with Don and had a frank and meaningful conversation. He has agreed to participate in formal training, as well as continue to listen and learn. We take this situation very seriously.

“It’s important to me that CNN balances accountability with fostering a culture where people can own up to, learn from, and grow from their mistakes. To that end, Don will return to CNN This Morning on Wednesday.

Lemon was criticized when he made “sexist” comments on Thursday’s show when discussing Haley’s suggestion that politicians 75 and older should face mental competency tests.

During Friday’s editorial call, Lemon said: ‘I’m sorry, I don’t mean to hurt anyone. I didn’t mean to offend anyone.

‘What I said came out wrong and I wish I hadn’t said it. I believe that women of any age can do anything they set their minds to. The people closest to me in this organization are women.
