Dominic Calvert-Lewin had ‘blurred vision’ but NO concussion, Sean Dyche reveals as Alex Iwobi may have suffered a hamstring injury in a double blow to the Everton boss

  • Everton suffered a 4-0 defeat at Villa Park on Sunday, their second defeat in two games
  • Sean Dyche said striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin suffered from ‘blurred vision’
  • The Toffees had forced out both Calvert-Lewin and Alex Iwobi through injuries

Everton’s second game in the Premier League marked a second successive defeat and a double injury to make matters worse.

Following Sunday’s 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa, boss Sean Dyche said striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin had managed to avoid a concussion after suffering a facial injury, although he will be assessed.

The striker was substituted in the 38th minute after colliding with World Cup winning goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

Consequently, Calvert-Lewin suffered a swollen cheekbone and was forced off, with Dutch star Arnaut Danjuma coming off the bench as a replacement.

Sean Dyche helped Everton out of the relegation battle last season, but has not started well

Things went from bad to worse for Everton as Alex Iwobi was knocked out later in the second half.

The Toffees boss gave an update on the two players in a post-game interview.

“Dom didn’t go off with a concussion; he had a hit to the cheekbone and a little blurry vision, so we’re checking it out,” Dyche said.

The 26-year-old striker has dealt with a long streak of injuries throughout his senior career to date. He suffered an ankle injury at the start of the 2022–23 season, followed by a hamstring problem as Everton entered the relegation battle.

Calvert-Lewin missed Everton’s first game of the season – a 1–0 defeat to Fulham – to build up his fitness.

The former England international was limited to just 15 Premier League starts last season as the Toffees narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the season.

As for Iwobi, Dyche said the team is “waiting” for an update for the Nigerian midfielder.

“Alex we’re waiting for, but it looks like a hamstring injury. Dom, we hope it’s just right.

“It’s unusual for Alex to relax his hamstrings very quickly, so he’s probably out – but I don’t know yet.”

The striker had quite a swelling when he left the field on Sunday

Toffees fans are still waiting for their first win of the season and start losing back-to-back

Everton struggled in their first two games, with Dyche labeling his team as ‘soft’ after Aston Villa scored four goals at Villa Park.

“Which reminded me before I got here, we conceded a goal and you just smelled the group getting weak very quickly. We conceded another one and everyone was looking at everyone to do something.

Aston Villa shot ahead thanks to goals from John McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Leon Bailey and Jhon Duran.

Toffees fans will hope the striker has not suffered a fractured face and that the swelling subsides quickly so he can return to Sean Dyche’s side as they chase their first win of the season.
