Wayne Bennett has nothing left to prove when it comes to his coaching genius, NRL legend Matty Johns has insisted.
Despite missing out on a high-profile tent signing ahead of their debut season, Bennett’s Dolphins have taken the NRL by storm, beating the Roosters, the Cowboys and the Raiders.
The supercoach’s reputation as the game’s greatest tactician has been the subject of much debate in recent years, but Johns is confident the conversation may now end after Bennett’s exploits with the Dolphins.
‘The question is asked: ‘Who is the best coach? Bennett? Bellamie? Or Big Jack?” he told the Daily Telegraph.
“With what Wayne did to the Dolphins, I think we can lock him up.
“There was a time when there was a belief that Wayne’s success had to be put in context because of the superstar teams he won games with.
“But throughout his career he’s been masterful at adjusting tactically, to who’s in the jerseys.
His ’92/’93 Broncos were all razzamatazz, but his 2000/2006 teams were dogged and gritty, just like his 2010 Dragons.
“Tactically, what he makes the Dolphins do is his best work of art. It’s genius to watch the Dolphins crush their opponents bit by bit.’
The Dolphins are looking for back-to-back wins after last week’s triumph in Townsville, but face a tough task in Jason Demetriou’s resurgent South Sydney Rabbitohs.
The NRL newcomers go into half time 14-6 at Suncorp Stadium.
