Dolly recalled a pivotal moment early in their marriage, revealing that she once convinced Carl to attend an awards ceremony in 1967, when she won BMI Song of the Year.
Despite the big win, ‘housemate’ Carl told her: ‘I wish you the best, but don’t ever ask me to go to another damn thing because I’m not going.’
And, she added, he never did.
But throughout their decades together, the couple, who renewed their vows in their Nashville home in 2016, have relied on their shared sense of humor to avoid conflict.

Dolly Parton, 77, and her husband Carl Dean, 81, have been married for 57 years after tying the knot in 1966, two years after they met
The “Jolene” singer spoke fondly of her “hilarious” husband, revealing, “He’s quiet and I’m loud, and we’re funny… we have a lot of fun.”
She added, “Always [there is] There’s too much tension, any of us can like to make a joke about it to really break the tension, where we don’t let it get to that point,” she explained.
“We never fought back and forth.”
The couple first met at a laundromat in Nashville in 1964, and throughout the dizzying heights of fame, Carl has remained a constant and supportive figure for Dolly behind the scenes.
As Dolly’s fame grew, Carl, who once ran a road construction company, stayed out of the spotlight, content to support his wife from behind the scenes.
And despite his reluctance to be in the public eye with her, Dolly has always made an effort to keep their romance alive.
In 2022, she revealed in an interview with E! News that she always dresses up for her husband.
‘Every day I put on some makeup and fix my hair, because I think, ‘Well, the whole world, I’m here and everyone sees me all dressed up, and I’m not just going home. and just flop on him,” she said.

Saying that she has “Christmas trees in all the rooms,” the singer revealed that tourists flock to admire the exterior of her home.
“It’s a little less sticky there,” she said. ‘I can fix it up any way I want inside!’
Dolly also shared a family tradition of dressing up as “Grandma Claus” for her grandchildren every year.
She said, “I’m going to put on my Santa suit and come down the chimney with my bag full of presents.”
‘Even though many children are grown up now, they still expect me to do it. One day I’ll be bouncing in that elevator!’
