Dog-friendly pub hits back at one-star review on Tripadvisor

A dog-friendly pub with hundreds of five-star reviews has responded to a disgruntled customer who complained that a dog was “begging” at their table.

The Clickham Inn in Blencow, Cumbria, voted the second best restaurant in Penrith on Tripadvisor, received a disparaging review from dissatisfied customer John, from Durham, who criticized the customer service and disruptive dogs.

But the traditional pub posted a forceful response to the rating, declaring the diner was rude and “we’re all collectively so glad you never come back.”

The critical customer wrote on the travel website: ‘Where to start? I was going to write a long negative review, but you’d probably get bored reading all the numbers.

The Clickham Inn in Blencow, near Penrith, responded to a one-star review it received on Tripadvisor

‘The main problem was the owner (Steve) who was very rude, abrupt and has no customer service skills.

‘If you like a dog barking at your table begging for food from your plate, maybe it’s for you.

‘The young waiters/waitresses were nice but when we asked about the dessert menu we were told the kitchen had closed.

John, from Durham, criticized the traditional pub’s customer service and a disruptive barking dog at the table.

‘Table was reserved at 8pm for my wife’s birthday – we had starters, main courses and several glasses of wine, drinks etc.

Steve rudely explained that the chef had been out all day and wanted to get home.

When asked about his dog begging at everyone’s table, his response was “It’s a dog-friendly pub.”

He went on to emphasize that his customers come for the food, which was ok… #standard.

‘How this restaurant/pub is second on TripAdvisor is beyond me.

‘My wife’s surprise birthday meal was ruined by a very unfriendly owner STEVE…you need to take a customer service course!

But the pub, which describes itself as a “cosy, dog-friendly” restaurant, retaliated with a response it said would expose “the truth”.

The pub, rated Penrith’s second best restaurant on Tripadvisor, responded to the review by saying the customer was “rude and dismissive” during his visit.

Geri B, tagged as owner of The Clickham Inn on Tripadvisor, wrote: “This review was expected and anyone reading your disgusting words will be interested in reading the truth.”

‘Firstly, upon entering, his smug and entitled self was rude and dismissive of our helpful staff to the point where the staff warned me about the terrible people at table 15.

‘After being escorted to your table and a short time after your drinks order was brought to your table, you were asked by an experienced member of our staff if you were ready to order.

‘This met with how I wanted to wait until I was ready to order and how fond of us we were for asking.

‘Well the rudeness continued throughout her meal to the point that both staff members mentioned her attitude to me in disgust.

‘I approached your table where you tried to scold me because I had not introduced myself to you when I arrived.

‘You proceeded to talk about me and had an opinion on everything, I tried to explain three times that we are a dog friendly country pub producing good quality home cooked food and not a full blown restaurant.

Your anger was quite ridiculous when at 9:45pm you asked to see the sweets menu only to be informed that the kitchen closed at 9:00pm, which is not early.

‘Normally we would have made your sweets, no matter what time, but you weren’t going to be rewarded for your bad behavior.

‘I suspect that your authoritative and overly opinionated rudeness probably has something to do with the failure of your restaurant in America, as you told me.

“We are all collectively very glad you never come back as we are known to be thoughtful and polite and it’s easy to be nice to nice people.

the Clickham Inn has received hundreds of five-star reviews on Tripadvisor, praising the service and food

‘People can read hundreds of our great reviews and then read yours, which you think is typical of a good people’s experience. I imagine your review says more about you than anything else.

Meanwhile, five-star reviews of the village pub have praised the ‘lovely friendly service’ and another commented on the ‘cosy setting and excellent quality food’.

After a visit in November, another said, ‘This has to be one of the best Sunday lunches we’ve ever had.’
