Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, the minor league affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has adopted an inappropriate slang word as their new nickname.

On Thursday, the Quakes announced they will pass by the ‘Chaquetas’ to pay tribute to the iconic gowns worn by Mariachis during a three-event Copa de la Diversion series.

Although the word “chaqueta” means “jacket” in English, it is also slang for masturbation.

While high society seemingly missed the word’s secondary meaning, fans on social media were quick to criticize the word’s urban definition.

As a result, the team removed their announcement. Shortly afterwards, the team backed down and subjected the name to a vetting process again.

“We were immediately concerned: Have we made an irreversible mistake here?” Quakes Executive Vice President and General Manager Grant Riddle told the newspaper Los Angeles Times on Friday.

“And so we immediately re-engaged those groups… and determined quite quickly that none of them were aware of it either. So that wasn’t their first thought.

“And just the idea that obviously (the slang definition) exists, but our intention was in no way anything other than the literal translation. We’re not trying to have fun with this.’

Hours later, the team front office doubled down on the name and reposted their announcement. They cited the presence and value of Mariachi music among Southern California’s Mexican communities.

“In Southern California, Mariachi music is a cherished art form,” the announcement read.

Additionally, the name choice was — in part — a tribute to Dodgers pitcher and Rancho Cucamonga resident Joe Kelly. During their 2021 visit to the White House, Kelly memorably wore a black mariachi jacket.

“Not only did he make an exceptional choice of style,” the Quakes wrote. “Rather, the pitcher honored music’s most prized qualities, many of which he shares in common with baseball: artistry, long-standing dedication to the craft, teamwork and the privilege of donning such historically significant uniforms.”

Riddle also noted that the name ‘Mariachi’ has already been claimed by another team. His side previously adopted the nickname ‘Tremboles’, which translates to ‘earthquakes’.

The team will continue to play as the Quakes in matches outside the Copa de la Diversion.
