Dodgers give update on Freddie Freeman after son Max, 3, diagnosed with rare nerve disease
The Los Angeles Dodgers have provided an update on first baseman Freddie Freeman as his 3-year-old son continues to battle health issues.
On Thursday, Freeman and his wife Chelsea announced that their son Maximus has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome after experiencing symptoms during the All-Star break.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke to the media about Freeman’s situation on Friday prior to the game against the Oakland Athletics.
“I didn’t even see that post, but I did text Freddie yesterday,” Roberts said. “He says they’re encouraged, so we’re just keeping hope and prayers.”
Freeman was placed on the family emergency list on Saturday and is not expected to return to the team for the series in Oakland as both he and the team prioritize his time with his family during this difficult situation.

Roberts indicated that Freeman has remained active during his absence, but he also indicated that there is no schedule yet for his return.
“I know Freddie moves, takes shots, moves his body,” Roberts said. “But I don’t expect him to do that. [play this weekend].
In an earlier Instagram Story, Chelsea shared that Max was taken to the hospital with unknown issues following the All-Star break and that Freddie met the family and spent the night in the emergency room after a game against the San Francisco Giants.
On Thursday, they jointly posted a more extensive message on their Instagram pages.
“Last Friday Max deteriorated rapidly and became completely paralyzed,” they wrote. We are fortunate that we were able to get him to the hospital in time so they could strengthen his lungs.
‘Freddie was in Houston at the time and rushed to catch the first flight back home. After much testing, Max was diagnosed with a severe case of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that is especially rare in children.’

The nerve disorder usually begins in the lower half of the body and can cause paralysis, as was the case with Maximus.
In the United States, there are fewer than 20,000 cases of the disease each year. The condition can be cured with blood treatments.
“These have been the hardest and scariest days of our lives. Maximus is such a special boy and he has fought SO hard,” they added. “This will be a journey of recovery but we are confident he will make a full recovery. We are overwhelmed by his improvements over the last 48 hours.”
“Maximus was taken off his breathing tube and off the ventilator yesterday, which is a huge victory for us. We believe in the power of prayer and we have witnessed a miracle in his recovery.”
“Please continue to keep Maximus and our family in your prayers. We appreciate and have felt all of your support.”
