The actor, known for his appearances in Doctor Who and Emmerdale, died 'peacefully in his sleep' on Christmas Day.
The news was confirmed via Richard's social media account by Líam Rudden, who shared the message on behalf of his family.
He confirmed: “It is with great sadness that the family of Richard Franklin asked me early this morning to share the news of his passing.
'Richard passed away peacefully in his sleep. Details about the funeral arrangements will be shared here as they are announced. Sleep well Richard. #RIP – Líam Rudden.'

The actor was known for his role as Captain Mike Yates of UNIT in Doctor Who from 1971 to 1974, when Jon Pertwee took on the lead role of the Time Lord.
Richard's love for the sci-fi series continued after his appearance on the show, while he also wrote books based on Doctor Who.
He is also known for his roles in Crossroads and Emmerdale Farm, but was mainly recognized for his performances on stage.
Richard also wrote the book Forest Wisdom: Radical Reform of Democracy and the Welfare State and was known for his activism.
