Doctor: This is why your urine should NEVER be clear when you go to the toilet – and the serious health warning everyone should know
Doctors warn that people who strive for ‘clear’ urine are doing more harm than good to their health.
Dr. Sermed Mezher from the UK took the world by storm this month when he shared a TikTok video about the damage that over-hydration can do to the body.
“If you are urinating clearly, that means you are probably drinking more than 2.5 litres of water a day. This means your kidneys are working at full capacity to keep the fluid out of your brain,” the doctor said.
“Water intoxication” is the term for people who become “severely overhydrated,” often resulting in hospitalization.
According to the medical expert, the first symptoms of overhydration are headache, foggy head and drowsiness.
He reminded those on the other end of the spectrum that water intake is crucial, but it’s important not to overdo it.
“As with most things in life, too much is bad, but so is too little,” he said.

According to Dr. Mezher, an average adult would need about two liters of water per day to get enough fluids.
The reaction to the video was mixed, with many people surprised that “clear urine” was a bad thing.
“What do you really want from me? Drink water or not,” asked one man.
“My life was ruined when I found out you can’t pee clear,” said another woman.
Others called the advice “highly misleading,” saying that if people become afraid of drinking too much water, it will likely lead to more dehydration.
“Ouch. Videos like this give the impression that water intoxication is common or easy to cause – it’s extremely rare and there’s nothing wrong with occasionally peeing clear. Chronic dehydration, on the other hand, is extremely common,” said one man.
This graph illustrates what the color of urine tells us about what is happening in our bodies.
“You don’t get hospitalized for drinking 2.5 liters a day. Water intoxication comes from drinking much more in a very short time. Why does he scare people so much,” agreed another.
Dr. Eric Chung spoke to FEMAIL about raising awareness of the risks of overhydration
Others suggested that daily water needs varied greatly from person to person and that if someone was even ‘somewhat active’, two litres might not be enough.
Dr Erin Chung, Professor of Surgery at the University of Queensland, spoke to FEMAIL about the dangers of drinking too much water.
Dr. Chung explained that moderation is key when it comes to hydration.
This new trend of drinking from giant water bottles “It’s great for keeping people hydrated and preventing kidney stones,” the doctor said.
‘But everything should be done in moderation to avoid disrupting the body’s internal mechanism that regulates fluid and electrolyte balance.’
According to the medical expert, overhydration can have “detrimental effects” on your body, such as kidney strain, hormonal imbalances and swelling in the limbs.
Dr. Chung advises people who are concerned about drinking too much fluid to always consult a professional.
“If you feel like you are drinking too much water (if you are constantly thirsty) or urinating too much, you should make an appointment with your GP for further evaluation and referral to specialists,” he said.
