Doctor: This is the ‘wild’ difference between male and female brains – and why women are healthier

A top psychiatrist has revealed one of the biggest differences between male and female brains.

Dr. Daniel Amen, a California-based brain specialist, studied more than 200,000 SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) scans to identify key differences between men and women.

Women have healthier and busier brains, Dr. Amen explains, meaning they go to prison 14 times less than men.

The difference is largely due to the fact that women have much healthier activity in their prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for thinking ahead, judging, impulse control, organization, planning, empathy, and learning from the mistakes you make.

Despite the increased activity, women are also more likely to suffer from depression than men.

Dr. Amen spoke with Lisa Bilyeu, co-founder of Quest Nutrition, about the key differences between male and female brains.

“Women generally have healthier brains, they’re busier brains,” he said. “The limbic part of their brain is very busy, which puts them at greater risk for depression,” he said in a video.

However, women have stronger frontal lobes, which is an indicator of better decision-making.

“Women go to prison 14 times less than men,” said the psychiatrist.

Bilyeu was quite shocked by the revelation.

‘Is it because [women] assess a danger or the consequence better than a guy?’ she asked, to which the psychiatrist agreed.

Dr. Amen went on to explain that a woman's extra aptitude for empathy and caring negatively impacts her longevity.

Dr. Amen went on to explain that a woman’s extra aptitude for empathy and caring negatively impacts her longevity.

“Married men live longer than single men, but married women not only live shorter lives than single people, they also die earlier,” Bilyeu said.

The psychiatrist revealed that men live longer because they have a woman who takes care of them.

“A man will live longer because [his wife] makes him go to the doctor and she screams when he texts and drives.”

What are the differences between men’s and women’s brains?

The male brain

  • 10 percent larger than female brains
  • Optimized for motor skills
  • Men rely on clues and distance traveled
  • More likely to develop alcohol dependence
  • 40% more likely to develop schizophrenia

The female brain

  • Stronger and healthier prefrontal cortex
  • Optimized for intuitive thinking
  • Women rely on landmarks when navigating
  • Twice as likely to have mental illnesses such as depression
  • Twice as likely to develop post-traumatic stress disorder

‘But women [have shorter life spans] because of men’s chronic stress.’

Dr. Amen advised that the only way to level the playing field would be for women to take more care of themselves.

“For example, if you’re on an airplane and the cabin pressure drops, you have to put on your own mask first.”

He added, “Women don’t do that. I’ve seen women take care of everyone and they don’t take care of themselves.’

Many were surprised by Dr. Amen and how male and female differ by nature.

“I didn’t know there really was a physical difference in the brain!” a woman wrote. “I always thought that differences were explained by hormones.”

“This makes so much sense and it’s so important to educate people.”

“Thank you for this invaluable knowledge, this is so informative.”

But some were skeptical of the findings.

“Measuring differences in blood flow between brains may not necessarily correlate with higher or lower performance on cognitively determined skills.”

“Things are not so clear, this is trying to explain away complicated processes.”
