We may think we know what is healthy for us: fruits and vegetables are good, sugar and sweets are bad.

But some products on supermarket shelves that are marketed as healthy are packed with a surprising amount of calories, fat and sugar.

Nutritionist Lon Ben-Asher told DailyMail.com, “Just because a manufacturer labels or markets the product as healthy doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

“Choose very fresh fruits, vegetables, low-fat or low-fat dairy products with no added sugars/sweeteners more often, and look for no salt on the label in packaged foods.”

Mr Ben-Asher recommended eating food in its most natural form to “get the nutritional and health benefits without compromising your health based on the added fats, sodium, sugars or sweeteners and extra calories.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a healthy diet is one that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and dairy products.

It also includes a range of protein-rich foods such as seafood, lean meats and poultry, eggs and nuts. It is also low in added sugars, salt, saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol. The CDC recommends staying within the daily calorie intake of 2,000 calories for women and 2,500 for men.
