Do you know how many calories and units are in your drink?

Do you know how many calories your favorite alcoholic drink contains?

You may be surprised to learn that three glasses of wine have the same amount of calories as two cheeseburgers.

That’s according to a calorie and unit calculator from the charity Drinkaware, which MailOnline readers can use by clicking here.

Health chiefs have long issued alcohol advice to drink no more than 14 units per week to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke or cancer.

But drinking regularly also increases the chance of being overweight or obese, which increases the chance of developing type 2 diabetes.

14 units of alcohol in a week can look like two small 330ml bottles of beer, three 175ml glasses of wine and two double shots of hard liquor. That would equal 1005 calories, three and a few cheeseburgers, and running for over 100 minutes to burn it all off, as the quiz image above shows

Six pints of beer clock in at 13.6 units, 1092 calories, 3.6 cheeseburgers and 109.2 minutes of running, says the drinkaware quiz.

The calculator shows that a pint of cider has the most calories on average at 216 calories, which can take you 20 minutes of running if you want to burn it off.

To burn the calories in just one pint of beer, you would have to run for more than 18 minutes.

And drinking three medium six-ounce glasses of wine is almost equivalent to eating one and a half cheeseburgers.

To burn that off, you’d have to run for 47 minutes.

Three large 250ml glasses of 13 percent white wine, about the same as a bottle, is 9.8 units.

It also has the same calories as 2.2 cheeseburgers, which would take over an hour to walk away.

The quiz calculates your total number of drinks for the week and tells you how many units and calories you've had. Above you can see that 15.9 units, which is more than the weekly recommended amount, can be 1274 calories. It is also said that this amount of alcohol is the same as eating 4.2 cheeseburgers and if you want to work it all off you need to run for 127.4 minutes

And the calories people consume from drinking alcohol tend to supplement, rather than replace, the calories people consume in the rest of their diet.

This means that people could get these so-called empty calories – which have no nutritional value – without thinking about it, which will lead to weight gain.

As a guideline, the NHS recommends that an average woman needs about 2,000 calories a day to maintain a healthy body weight, while a man needs about 2,500.

Drinking alcohol also interrupts other body processes, such as nutrient absorption and fat processing, because the body must prioritize the elimination of alcohol.

This can lead to more belly fat in regular drinkers – known as a beer belly.

Experts recommend drinking no more than 14 units per week to avoid getting too many calories from alcohol. It is also recommended to have several drink-free days per week.

14 units of alcohol in a week can look like two small 330ml bottles of beer, three 175ml glasses of wine and two double shots of hard liquor.

That would equal 1,005 calories, or three and a half cheeseburgers, and it takes more than 100 minutes of running to burn.

But if you drink your weekly units in alcopops, averaging 14.3 units in 13 275ml bottles, you could be in for a shock.

Drinking that much is the same as eating more than seven cheeseburgers and comes to 2,210 calories. That’s more than the average daily calorie intake for a woman.

The Drinkaware calculator says it could take 221 minutes to burn this.

For comparison, drinking seven double gins, which is also 14 units, is equivalent to eating two and a half cheeseburgers. That’s 770 calories and 77 minutes of running.
