In the study, scientists analyzed the snap judgments people make about each other and found that faces considered “rich” are also considered more trustworthy.

They have a smiling mouth, chiselled facial features, raised eyebrows, close-set eyes, and rosy cheeks – characteristics that also appear trustworthy, warm, and competent.

Meanwhile, faces perceived as ‘poor’ have lowered eyebrows, a shorter chin, a downturned mouth and a darker, cooler skin tone – making them appear untrustworthy, cold and awkward.

The research focused on what makes someone appear to be of a higher or lower social class, and how these characteristics relate to the perception of a person’s personality.

Dr. Thora Bjornsdottir, lead author of the study, said hasty judgments based solely on appearances can have long-lasting consequences for individuals.

She said: ‘People who are perceived as belonging to a high or low social class are often also judged as having advantageous or unfavorable qualities respectively.

‘Such judgments are made even on the basis of facial expression alone, and this can have substantial consequences, including disadvantaging those perceived as belonging to the lower social class.

‘The stereotypes we cherish influence our perception.

‘Our impressions of other people can lead to certain advantages or disadvantages for them.’

The researchers found that poor-looking faces were more “infantile,” with stocky, round facial features like those of a child.

These characteristics may be related to poor fitness, low intelligence or a submissive personality.

Meanwhile, “rich” faces were longer and more defined, with protruding noses, upturned mouths and high foreheads.

These characteristics made them look more dominant, capable, and honest.

Professor Rachael Jack said: ‘Our research shows how specific facial features play a crucial role in connecting perceptions of social class with related stereotypes.

‘These findings are not only valuable for advancing our understanding of central theories of social perception, but may also inform future interventions designed to challenge biased perceptions.’
