Djordje Petrovic is hailed by Chelsea fans for his ‘out of this world’ mind games after saving Matt Ritchie’s decisive penalty against Newcastle… as they claim the £14m signing is already proving to be a bargain

  • Djordje Petrovic joined Chelsea from New England Revolution this summer
  • He currently replaces Robert Sanchez, who is absent with a knee injury
  • West Ham can WIN the League Cup… don't get stuck in the rotation. Crazy it! Go all out at Anfield – It all starts

Chelsea supporters have praised Djordje Petrovic after his so-called mind games during their Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Newcastle on penalties.

The two sides faced off in the last eight of the competition at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening, with the Blues desperate for silverware after a mixed start to Mauricio Pochettino's time at the club, while the Magpies were keen to go one step further after the defeat against Man. Last season United reached the final.

Callum Wilson put Newcastle ahead in the first half after a Benoit Badiashile error and it looked like that would be enough for victory.

However, Mykhailo Mudryk took advantage of Kieran Trippier's mistake in stoppage time to level the match before the Blues won 4–2 on penalties after Petrovic saved Matt Ritchie's decisive penalty.

The Serbian goalkeeper made only his second start for the club since his £14million move from New England Revolution in the summer, with number 1 Robert Sanchez out with a knee injury sustained against Everton earlier this month.

And eagle-eyed Chelsea fans were quick to shower him with praise after spotting his antics ahead of Ritchie's penalty.

As the winger began his run-up, Petrovic was seen pointing to his right, as if to indicate he knew the Newcastle man would be heading that way.

Instead, Ritchie fired high onto Petrovic's left flank, with the 24-year-old making a stunning save to secure a breakthrough moment for his new club.

It backed up his impressive career record from 12 yards, with Petrovic having saved five of the 16 penalties he conceded during his time in MLS.

And after his stop, Chelsea fans were quick to praise their stand-in goalkeeper, saying: 'We cooked them. Petrovic mind games are out of this world.'

Another added: 'Petrovic with the mind games and the save. This is Chelsea's new #1.'
