DJ Black Coffee has been hospitalized in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo after suffering injuries due to severe turbulence during a flight from Brazil to Argentina.
The Grammy Award-winning South African musician, 47, was traveling to the city of Mar Del Plata on Sunday for a performance at club Mute when the incident occurred – which resulted in “unforeseen complications” – a statement on his social media accounts on Wednesday read .
On Tuesday it emerged that he was recovering from surgery after suffering ‘severe blows’ to his body in his private plane.
A statement from Mute, first published by the Argentine press, said: ‘Dear Argentine fans, Black Coffee regrets to inform you that due to severe air turbulence on his private plane from Florianopolis to Mar del Plata, he had to make an emergency landing at Montevideo Airport.
‘He suffered severe blows to his body and is currently under observation in a clinic in the same city.

“We regret to inform you that he will not be on the show today.”
Media in the South American country said the statement was released before he underwent surgery.
The DJ is reportedly receiving the best possible medical care and is being supported by his team and family members.
A post on his social media accounts read: ‘Black Coffee was involved in a serious travel accident on a flight en route to his scheduled show in Mar Del Plata.
“The incident resulted in unforeseen complications and left him injured
“We can confirm that he is receiving the best possible medical care and is surrounded by a supportive family and team.
“Despite the challenges ahead, Black Coffee is optimistic and is recovering well
“He looks forward to being with you again soon.”
The DJ – real name Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo – performed in Brazil in the first days of 2024.
In his previous Instagram post on December 30, he reflected on the past year and wrote: ‘2023 is a year I will never forget. I’m looking forward to the coming new year.’
Maphumulo married actress and television presenter Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa in 2011 and they divorced in 2020.
They have two children together and he has two more from a previous relationship.
In 2022 he won the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album for Subconsciously – beaten Fallen Embers – Illenium, Music Is the Weapon (Reloaded) – Major Lazer, Shockwave – Marshmello, Free Love – Sylvan Esso and Judgment – Ten City.
His career started around 1994 and since then he has released nine studio albums.
