A mother whose son died in a car accident caused by drink-driving lashed out at the driver responsible, who was sentenced to just 179 days in jail for the murder.

Keisha Reid, the mother of 24-year-old Jay’quan Reid of Mecklenburg County in North Carolina, called out the destructive actions of Katiyah Hines that led to the fatal car accident in August 2022.

Hines pleaded guilty to being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, but the perceived light sentence has been widely criticized.

When the judge sentenced the drunk driver this week, Hines was actually released and released on time. She had been in prison since last summer’s accident and spent 179 days behind bars.

‘How do you sleep at night? You can’t even look at me!’ Reid yelled at Hines as he pointed a finger at her in court on Thursday.

Hines claimed it was the victim, Jay’quan, who pulled the wheel and caused the crash – something the crash reconstruction team couldn’t rule out.

Prosecutors failed to prove that Hines’s impairment ultimately caused the crash.

Hines crashed into two parked cars in North Charlotte, resulting in the death of Jay’quan Reid. He was partially thrown from the car in the impact.

In court, Keisha Reid tearfully expressed her devastation and inability to forgive Hines when she shared how the crash had impacted their family’s lives.

She told how she hadn’t been able to sleep well since the night of the crash.

‘You have taken my child from me; you could have made a better decision. My granddaughter was six months old at the time; she’ll never know her father’s voice,” Reid sobbed to Hines

‘My grandson was one; he does not sleep; I haven’t slept peacefully since August 22.’

The rest of Reid’s family were too overwhelmed with emotion, their fear and disappointment palpable, as they were unable to speak on camera. They said Queen City News how they felt Hine’s punishment was way too lenient.

They said they would like to see a change in the law to provide greater accountability in such tragic cases.
