Disney Plus password sharing fees are official: Here’s what it costs and how it compares to Netflix

The stricter rules against password sharing on Disney Plus officially went into effect in the US in September. This week, we learned how much it costs to add an additional member to your subscription. And that’s not good news.

Disney outlined the new rules in an article on its website on Wednesday (Sept. 25) titled “Paid Sharing on Disney Plus,” which states that anyone outside your “household” will need to be added as an “Additional Member” or sign up for a new account.

US €6.99 €9.99 €7.99
United Kingdom €3.99 €4.99 €4.99

There are two fees associated with the ‘Extra Member’ add-on (see the table above for US and UK fees. Australia is yet to be confirmed, but we’ve reached out to Disney and will update this article when we hear more). These fees apply to both the Standard and Premium membership tiers.

Most notably, the add-ons cost over 80% of the price of a Standard (ads-enabled) subscription, so many people would likely be inclined to simply create a new account. While that figure will drop to 70% on October 17 when Disney Plus subscription prices increase by $1-2 in the US, it’s still over half the price of a subscription.

Starting this week, you can purchase the Extra Member add-on for your account in the US, Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Europe, the UK, and Asia Pacific. However, the add-on is only available to standalone subscribers and cannot be purchased if you’re signed up for a Disney Plus bundle, whether that’s the Duo Basic with Hulu or the Disney Plus, ESPN Plus, and Hulu Mega Bundle.

The stricter rules against password sharing on Disney Plus have been in effect since early 2024. In some regions, like the UK, they officially went into effect on June 1, but in the US they didn’t go into effect until September.

The approach follows in the footsteps of Netflix’s password-sharing changes, which rolled out in the US in May 2023, but is considerably more expensive than its rival. Netflix charges a flat $8 more to add an additional member to its Standard (no ads) or Premium plans. Meanwhile, Disney charges $7 for an add-on to its basic accounts with ads, and an even steeper $10 more for its ad-free plans.

That’s a blow to anyone who just started watching the new series Agatha Always Already using a shared account, which wraps up on October 30. If you still want to watch the best Disney Plus movies and Disney Plus shows, there are a number of deals you can take advantage of, including one for Disney that is one of the best streaming deals this month.

Luckily, you still have one day to dodge the Disney Plus price hike with this incredible deal that gets you 3 months of Disney Plus Standard with ads for just $1.99 per month. You’ll have to be quick, though, because the deal ends on September 27.
