Disney+ FINALLY restores Daryl Hannah’s nude butt in 1984 rom-com Splash

Disney+ has finally restored Daryl Hannah’s naked butt in the 1984 fantasy rom-com Splash after the questionable use of CGI to cover her exposed derriere with fake hair.

The streaming service has faced constant backlash since its launch in November 2019 for its inconsistent censorship policies, including the mind-boggling decision to edit Hannah’s backside in the mermaid movie starring Tom Hanks.

However, three years later Source for comic bookss reported that Disney+ has fully restored the so-called nude scene as part of Splash’s 4K upgrade.

Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah co-starred in the 1984 fantasy rom-com Splash, which is about a man who unknowingly falls in love with a mermaid.

Directed by Ron Howard, the film is about a young man named Allen (Hanks) who unknowingly falls in love with a mermaid (Hannah) two decades after she saved him from drowning as a child.

Splash was originally rated PG when it was released by Disney under Touchstone Pictures in the early ’80s, but even with the edit, Disney+ raised it to a PG-13 rating.

In the famous scene, which is fairly tame by today’s standards, a naked Hannah kisses Hanks on the beach before diving into the ocean.

The actress was shot from the shoulders until she turned and ran into the water. Her long blonde hair already covered most of her bum, but the streaming service went even further with her edits.

Fans were surprised to see Hannah’s backside censored while watching Splash on the streaming service, which launched in late 2019

The result was an unrealistic piece of CGI hair that blocked her entire backside.

In April 2020, YouTube film reviewer Allison Pregler drew attention to what many fans believed was a blatant use of CGI after streaming the film and noticing the change.

“Disney+ didn’t want butts on their platform, so they edited Splash with digital fur technology,” she tweeted at the time.

That same month Vanity purse published an article about the company’s censorship policy with the headline “On Disney+, not all butts are created equal.”

Writer Drew Taylor pointed out that the streaming service edited Hannah’s backside in Splash, but left images of nudity in Pixar’s Brave, The Simpsons Movie, George in the Jungle, and Fantasia untouched.

The CGI hair didn’t move when Hannah dove into the water (left), making it easy for critics to spot. Many fans thought the nudity in the original scene (right) was pretty tame at first

At the time, Disney+ only offered G, PG, and PG-13 movies. (The company added R-rated movies to its list last summer.)

“I’m pretty sure the PG-13 rating doesn’t prescribe nudity [a] sexual context,” a Disney+ spokesperson said The Ringers December 2019.

Taylor hypothesized that the nudity in Splash may have been edited because the film is romantic in nature, but he noted that there is sex in it with or without Hannah’s bare butt.

Critics have mocked the film’s CGI censorship on Twitter for years, with many pointing out the hypocrisy that only some of the nudity has been edited.

After years of mockery over the censorship, the streaming network has fully reinstated the so-called nude scene as part of Splash’s 4K upgrade

The fact that they had to [CGI] hair on Daryl Hannah’s ass in Splash for the Disney+ app, but Hulks green a** is allowed? Make it make sense,” one person tweeted.

Another wanted to know who’decided to give Daryl Hannah an extremely bizarre hair butt in the Disney+ version of Splash?’

‘John Candy is looking for women’s skirts and Madison and [Allen] spend their entire first day together before she even utters a word, but Disney+ draws the line at Darryl Hannah’s butt buster. Heaven forbid children see a human ass,” another wrote.

Since then, Disney+ has restored Splash to its former glory, but viewers still have to bypass the parental lock feature on the platform to see the original movie.
