Disaster at defunct Colorado gold mine leaves more than 10 people trapped 1,000 feet underground

More than ten people are trapped 1,000 feet deep in a gold mine after an equipment failure in Colorado.

Eleven people have already been rescued from the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, east of Cripple Creek, according to the Teller County Sheriff’s Office.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department is also on scene and was called to the area just after 1 p.m.

The mine, a tourist attraction, officially closed in the 1960s but continues to offer tours that take people up to 100 stories deep into the earth.
