Dick Van Dyke, 97, to guest star as a man with amnesia on Days of Our Lives

The legendary Dick Van Dyke may have done a lot during his seven-decade career, but he just landed his first-ever guest starring role on a soap opera, Days of Our Lives, in an episode airing this fall on Peacock.

The 97-year-old national treasure — who is just an Oscar away from elite EGOT status — will play “a mysterious man with amnesia” opposite three-time Daytime Emmy Award nominee Deidre Hall and his gym buddy Drake Hogestyn.

“Drake and I went to the same gym together. I used to make fun of him: “Say, don’t you ever have parts for old people? Come on, give me a part!” And he took me seriously. He gave me a part,’ Dick said Access to Hollywood on Thursday.

“I’ve played old men before, but comical old men. The first time I ever played my 97-year-old self.”

Van Dyke continued, “I started looking [an episode] and some of those people have been doing it for 20 years. That’s about all the homework I could do was watch one and see how they did. The other thing, you have to hold on [a moment] because there’s something about music and we said something exciting.’

On Wednesday, the white-haired triple threat — who has 1.1 million social media followers — shared a video from behind the scenes of the creation of his leprechaun costume from The Masked Singer.

Dick gave a shout-out to his vocal coach Amy Chapman, helper Jimmy Staley, and “all the behind-the-scenes crew and artisans who put on such a fun and creative show.”

Van Dyke was the first contestant eliminated from the ninth season of Fox’s celebrity singing competition on February 15 after performing the 1928 song When You’re Smiling by Larry Shay, Mark Fisher and Joe Goodwin.

The founder of Vantastix also mentioned his “everything” aka second wife Arlene Silver, who is 46 years his junior at age 51.

Dick originally met the Bronx-born, LA-raised singer when she was applying his makeup at the 13th Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2007, where he presented Julie Andrews with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Van Dyke and Arlene celebrated 11 years of marriage on February 29.

It’s been a month since the great-grandfather of four slammed his face into his steering wheel when he crashed his Lexus LS 500 into a gate in Malibu, causing a lip crack that required two stitches.

Dick has pretty good genes considering that his mother Hazel died in 1994 at the age of 95 and he smoked for 50 years.

Van Dyke is best known for his memorable roles on The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961-66), Mary Poppins (1964), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) and, most recently, Mary Poppins Returns (2018).

Iowa fans can then watch the acting veteran perform in Robert Darwell’s documentary The 90s Club, which screens next Wednesday at the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival in Dubuque.
