Polish game development studio Artificer, which developed the 2023 turn-based tactical game Showgunnersis laying off 28 of its employees, it has been confirmed.
The studio is owned by Devolver Digital, the American game publisher that has published indie hits such as Cult of the Lamb And Enter the Gungeon. In a statement to Ny Breaking Gaming (TRG), Devolver confirmed that 18 of the layoffs at Artificer will take effect immediately, while 10 will take place at a later date.
“Yesterday, Devolver and studio Artificer made the difficult decision to reduce Artificer’s workforce by 28 employees, 18 of which are effective immediately and 10 following the release of their current project,” Devolver’s statement said.
“Over the past year, both companies have worked together to overcome the studio’s difficulties to ensure that Artificer remains open and that their hard work is realized with the launch of their next game,” it continues. “Layoffs aren’t easy, and the remaining team at Artificer and Devolver Digital are committed to supporting these talented and creative professionals as they find new roles across the industry.”
TRG asked which part of the studio these layoffs will affect and which roles are affected, but did not receive answers to these questions.
This week, Devolver also confirmed a number of changes to its leadership and governance, “as part of planning for Devolver’s long-term growth and development.” Namely, Douglas Morin has stepped down as CEOand has been replaced by former CEO and co-founder Harry Miller.
In a statement, Miller said he is “excited” to step back into the role, adding: “It is an incredible pleasure and honor to continue working with the fantastic and talented team at Devolver, building a strong building a pipeline of fun and creativity, and of course delivering our long-term growth strategy.”
