Devin Haney has brought a relentless sled to Australia’s George Kambosos ahead of their world title rematch, saying his opponent’s trash talk is so bad that Australian fans have now embraced him.

The defending lightweight champion has returned down under for the first time since dismantling Kambosos in front of 40,000 fans at Marvel Stadium in a slick 12-round performance.

The American has kept very unobtrusive in the lead-up to Sunday’s rematch at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena, spending much of his fight camp on a mattress in his Sydney gym and barely doing any media interviews.

Kambosos (pictured leading up to the first match) has kept a very low profile for the rematch, spending much of his fight camp on a mattress in his Sydney gym and barely doing any media interviews

Haney says he wasn’t surprised at all after the outcome of their last fight, suggesting the 29-year-old embarrassed himself by not keeping his promises before the fight.

“His trash talk played against him,” said the undefeated American.

“Everything he said he was going to do he couldn’t, he didn’t do and it worked against him.

“I feel like Australia has included me as one of mine.

George has made it easier for Australia to cling to me.

“He’s a little quiet this time. I don’t know if it’s strategic or something, but in the end I will do what I do whether he talks loudly or not.

Haney (pictured towards Kambosos on Tuesday) believes the rematch will go the same way again as he is simply the better fighter

“Everything I said I would do in the first fight I did.”

Many boxing experts and fans believe the Aussie has only one chance against Haney – who destroyed Kambosos with his jab to make history as the first man to unite the lightweight division in the four-band era.

And the 23-year-old believes things will go the same way again because he’s just the better fighter.

“I’ve been polishing my tools since the first fight,” Haney said.

“I’m ready for anything George brings to the table.

Haney gave a 12 round masterclass in the first fight and dismantled the Aussie with a well trained jab that landed all night

“I’ll be a better version this time. I’ll beat him because it’s part of the game, George wants what I have and that’s the belts.

“Kambosos has a solid team, but on the night I was the better fighter and it will be no different on October 16.”

Kambosos claims he’s kept quiet this time because the rematch is “selling itself” and he’s confident he’s made all the changes needed to get his belt back.

“It’s going to be sweeter this time, getting them back and becoming a two-time undisputed champion,” Kambosos told the Herald.

“This here is a serious legacy, not only in Australian boxing, but also in world boxing. This gives me goosebumps, that’s why I’m so motivated. ‘

‘The fire is burning. I can’t wait to get in there. I’ve been patient, but I’m also struggling a bit. This is a legacy here.’

It was also announced on Wednesday that Kambosos will not have his American trainer Javiel Centeno with him for Sunday’s game.

‘Ferocious’ has been reunited with his original Australian trainer Chris Bakis, who will be in his corner at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena.

Bakis is a highly respected coach and was with Kambosos for the first 14 fights of his career to bring Australian and Oceania lightweight titles.
