Devastated Nick Kyrgios makes bombshell admission about his future as he crashes out of Australian Open in expletive-laden Grand Slam comeback against ‘the next Andy Murray’
A devastated Nick Kyrgios admitted on Tuesday evening that this could be the last time he plays singles at the Australian Open.
The injury-ravaged star said he fought not to throw in the towel during his defeat to British star Jacob Fearnley as his stomach pain took its toll during the match.
Doubts had been raised over his fitness heading into the Australian Open, with Kyrgios previously admitting it would be a ‘miracle’ if he could return for the slam.
But after the match he made a huge statement: ‘Realistically, I don’t really see myself playing singles here anymore.
“So… It was special. I absorbed that. It was pretty good. I mean, yeah, I knew I had a double play and in those moments I took it all in tonight.”
Kyrgios added that he was “physically hurting” but would not abandon the fans “who had been waiting for hours” to throw in the towel.
“I knew it was going to be tough tonight,” he said.
‘Because of my physical condition I knew that I would really be hindered in my serve. But just seeing the fans waiting in line for four or five hours and the amount of people supporting me, it was hard to throw in the towel.
“It would have been very easy to just roll over, but I tried to do the best I could with the state I was in physically.
“It was obviously heartbreaking. I wanted to play well and the timing of the stomach ache is not good, but it is what it is.’
