- New trend taking Australian campsites by storm
- Popular device called a “game-changer” by nomads
A single photo of a Queensland campsite has revealed a growing trend among campers, with a new gadget taking the scene by storm.
A man in Airlie Beach posted a photo of five 4WDs and four of Elon Musk’s SpaceX-powered, satellite-based Starlink internet networks.
“New game: Spot the Starlink,” he captioned the photo of the white satellite dishes.
Australians were quick to share their thoughts on the popular device.

And it will only increase. I love my Starlink!’ one man remarked.
“It’s the latest flex in caravan parks,” wrote a second.
A third disagreed, writing, “Personally, I couldn’t think of anything worse than going on vacation and taking the internet with me lol.”
The Starlink offers download speeds of 100Mb/s-plus – 10 times the speed of NBN – with users connecting to the internet through an array of small satellites.
There are 4,000 Starlink satellites launched into low Earth orbit since 2019, with a plan to increase that to 12,000 and then 42,000.
Starlink currently provides internet to 1.5 million subscribers in 60 countries, including 120,000 customers in Australia.
The device offers speeds that are almost 10 times higher than those of the NBN network.
Many avid adventurers have posted glowing reviews of their Starlink to Facebook groups created specifically for Australian users to share their tips and tricks.
A family who runs the Instagram page “Our Whittle Adventure” said after using Starlink for just a month, “everything had changed” for them.
“We definitely hesitated to buy Starlink, it’s a lot of money when we’ve been doing so well for over 2 years without Starlink, but with the 50% discount on hardware and 2 months free we decided to take the plunge said the couple.
‘Now, after a month of use, it has changed everything for us! We are now confident that we can be anywhere during those working days, calling via WiFi works great with no noticeable delay, download speeds are ridiculous (currently 280MB).’
“It has also given us an extra sense of security as we can contact family and friends wherever we are.
“The only real downside we have for it is that it needs 240vAC, so we have to use our inverter to power it.”
