The Jets are considering naming a fourth starting quarterback this season after Trevor Siemian replaced Tim Boyle on Sunday.
New York's playoff hopes – while not yet over – took another huge blow when they were defeated 13-8 by the Atlanta Falcons at MetLife Stadium.
It was the fifth straight loss for the Jets and leaves them at 4-8 on the season as they look ahead to another year without postseason football.
The loss also means Aaron Rodgers is unlikely to play under center again this season.
The veteran quarterback will now surely focus fully on his recovery from his torn Achilles tendon, without the rush to return for the playoffs.
The Jets are considering whether to start Tim Boyle (left) or Trevor Siemian (right) this week
Jets coach Robert Saleh is considering which quarterback to start against the Texans
“Whether you're in or out, it doesn't matter,” coach Robert Saleh said after the Falcons' loss.
“You have to show up. You have to work. You have to find ways to get better.”
After another dismal performance — the Jets have scored just 10 offensive touchdowns in 12 games this year — Saleh is now considering starting Siemian this week against the Texans.
Boyle was criticized for missing opportunities to throw to Garrett Wilson on a few long plays.
“We are searching,” Saleh said. “I felt like there were a lot of missed opportunities today with potentially explosive play and possible touchdowns on the field.
“We have to find a way to take advantage when we get those opportunities.”
If he does, it will be the first time the Jets have fielded four different quarterbacks in the same season since 1989.
Aaron Rodgers is unlikely to return this season with the Jets missing out on the playoffs
However, Siemian didn't particularly light up MetLife Stadium when he entered on Sunday.
The former Broncos starter was sacked three times and fumbled with the ball three times. – completing just five of thirteen passes for a modest 66 yards.
Zach Wilson – benched for Tim Boyle last month – could also return to the side despite winning three of nine starts since Rodgers went down.
“He (Wilson) is always under consideration,” Saleh said. 'I'm not there yet at what level.'
Whatever Saleh decides, it doesn't look like Rodgers will be available next week.
The 40-year-old's return always seemed to depend on the team reaching the play-offs, so he is now highly unlikely to return this season.
“No, our plan for Aaron is consistent,” Saleh added. 'He is recovering. That's all he does.'
