Disturbing details are emerging in the investigation into the death of a young man in a suburban Melbourne park.

The 28-year-old man was found injured in Balmoral Park, off Lennon Parkway, at 4.20am on Saturday.

Emergency services performed CPR on the man, but he died at the scene.

Victoria Police Detective Constable Dean Thomas said murder investigators found “multiple knives” at Balmoral Park near Derrimut, about 22km west of the CBD, and that the man appeared to have suffered stab wounds.

“I believe there were several knives found in the area,” he said.

“Again, do they have anything to do with this? They’re going to have to be forensically examined.”

Detective Inspector Thomas said the man was last seen by his sister at around 9pm in the Derrimut area, and is believed to have been with four other men.

Police are now trying to reconstruct the men’s movements and are calling on people who may have dashcam footage or have seen anything suspicious in the area to come forward.

Inspector Thomas also said police suspect there were people in the park with the victim but that they have since ‘disappeared’.

“We really don’t know, but we think there were a number of people present who scattered and ran away,” he said.

Several people in the park performed CPR on the victim before emergency services arrived.

According to Inspector Thomas, the call to police came from someone in the park.

“They turned up in the park and obviously we’re trying to piece that all together, to figure out what their connection is to the deceased,” he said.

He said police had no evidence the incident was gang-related.

“It appears that our (victim) has no gang ties, but again, it’s too early,” he said.

Police alerted the victim’s family in the morning and the man’s mother was reportedly in a distraught state at the scene.

Forensic officers continue to search the park for evidence.

“The most important thing is not to rush it,” he said.

“We have to make sure we don’t miss anything.”
