Derrimut fire, Melbourne: Chemical explosion sparks large factory fire
Communities in Melbourne’s west are being warned of smoke after a factory went up in flames following a major chemical explosion.
Firefighters were called to the blaze at Swann Drive in Derrimut, about 30km from Melbourne’s CBD, at around 11.20am on Wednesday.
A major chemical explosion at the plant has led to a major fire. The fire is being fought by several specialized firefighters, including several aerial platforms.
A community warning has been issued for Albion, Braybrook, Brooklyn, Derrimut, Laverton North, Sunshine, Sunshine West, Tottenham and Truganina.
There is no danger to the community, but people are urged to monitor the situation closely.
Drivers in the area have been asked to keep their windows open and set their ventilation to recirculation.
There are also emergency services on site.
