Dermot O’Leary admits being a 50-year-old dad to a toddler is ‘full’ as he opens up about the changes in his life since becoming a parent

Dermot O’Leary has opened up about being a father to a toddler and how becoming a parent has changed his priorities.

The television presenter, 50, lives in London with his wife Dee Koppang O’Leary and their son Kasper, three.

Speak with The timeshe explained how much energy it takes to keep up with his son, saying it can be “full.”

Dermot said: ‘I turned 50 this year and being a father to a three-year-old can be a full-fledged occupation. A partner who had twins just before Kasper arrived said to me, “Don’t worry about how old you are, just make sure you stay in shape.” And he’s right. I took Kasper to the RAF Museum last week and it was like an Olympic sprint, running from one exhibition to the next. As soon as we came outside he said, “Can we come by again?”

He went on to describe his love for family time, saying the daily tasks like changing diapers or playing silly games were the most fun.

He explained: “Dee’s job means we’re not always together, but on the evenings when we are, we make the most of spending plenty of time together as a family. I can’t understand those parents who don’t enjoy changing diapers or crawling around on the carpet pretending to be a race car. Isn’t that the absolute joy of parenthood?’

Dermot added that his priorities in life had changed with the birth of his son, from his material needs to how he wants to spend his free time.

He said: ‘Having a child has changed what I want in life and what makes me happy. Do I need another car? The latest gadget? Some vintage Van Morrison vinyl? No, forget the material things. What I want is to be with the people I love. Being a father puts the world into perspective.’
