A board-certified dermatologist has revealed the skincare mistakes you need to avoid if you want to ‘age like a fetus’ – and some of them are quite surprising.
The crucial information was shared in a new video posted on TikTok by Dr. Shereene Idriss from Idriss dermatology in New York City.
“The rule here is to achieve an even skin tone, because once your skin tone is even, there is no filter,” Dr. Idriss in her video before sharing her advice.
“You can fake it ’til you make it until you’re six feet under.”
The first tip was to avoid using only vitamin C in your skin care.

“The rule here is to achieve an even skin tone, because once your skin tone is even, there is no filter,” Dr. Idriss in her video before sharing her advice.
“Starting with number one, a lot of you think that vitamin C is the holy grail ingredient when it comes to skin care and that you’re going to achieve a glowing complexion, but that’s not the case,” she explained.
When used topically, vitamin C works to protect the skin against external damage such as pollution, prevent anti-aging, reduce dark circles and hyperpigmentation, among other things.
“There are no miracle ingredients and only vitamin C can affect your skin tone,” she explained.
The dermatologist said vitamin C is just one component you should use if you have uneven skin tone and dark spots.
The next no-no she warned about was relying on laser treatments.
“Why are you going to get laser treatments if you’re not going to do the hard work at home?” Dr. Idriss wondered.
‘Your skin care should be consistent on a daily basis to tackle discolouration and hyperpigmentation, and lasers should be seen as a boost.’
“And believe me, I do a lot of laser treatments in my practice, so this is against my own benefit,” she added.

The third thing she recommended avoiding was overuse or no use of any retinol product at all.
Retinol, a form of vitamin A and an ingredient often added to various skin care products and topicals, helps increase skin cell production, per Cleveland Clinic.
It also works to unclog your pores and exfoliate the skin, giving your skin anti-aging effects and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
“If you use too much retinol, you get inflamed, and if your skin can’t tolerate it, inflammation is the worst thing you can do for your skin and your skin tone,” she explained.
“And if you don’t use retinol, you’re really missing out, so consistency over intensity, try to incorporate it into your routine at least two to three times a week.”
And her last two tips went hand in hand: making sure you don’t expect results overnight, and expecting the sun to “heal” you.
‘It is unrealistic to expect results overnight. It takes time to undo the damage and it took years to cause the damage,” Dr. warned. Idriss.
“And lastly, just wear the damn sunscreen,” she concluded.
