A dermatologist has revealed what she thinks is the most important skincare tip you need to know – and it’s actually quite simple.

The surprising information was shared in a new video posted to TikTok by a New York City dermatologist, Dr. Shereene Idriss from Idriss Dermatology.

Idriss is a cosmetic expert in the field of ‘face, fillers and lasers’ and is the owner of the eponymous skin care brand Dr. Idriss, so she knows her trade.

“Stop buying skincare products if you want clear skin,” Idriss began new video.

“Besides your cleanser, sunscreen, and moisturizer, the only serums you need are the ones that solve your skin’s biggest problems,” she said.

Idriss said using these products won’t help your skin because they don’t target exactly the right things you need

For example, the board-certified dermatologist said that if you have hyperpigmentation and are using salicylic acid, it doesn’t exactly help.

The same goes for people who have acne and use the active form of vitamin C, or who have fine lines and only use a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid.

She said using these products won’t help your skin because they don’t target the right things you need.

“You need to learn how to create a customized, hyper-specific, and targeted skincare routine based on your skin’s needs, not those of your friends,” Idriss explains.

“And that’s why I’ve been preaching consistency over intensity every day for years,” she concluded.

Curiously, similar advice was recently shared by Rhode Skin cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson during an interview with DailyMail.com.

“What I tell consumers is to think about what their own skincare needs are, and not rush to the latest TikTok trending product or method,” the cosmetic chemist told DailyMail.com.

“Focus on what your skin needs and look for products that will meet those needs,” he added.

For example, if your skin is losing firmness or is extremely dry or sensitive, you should look for products that can help you address these issues.

The BeautyStat also recommends focusing on the product and what its benefits are.

This included looking at clinical and consumer testing to ensure the brand lives up to its claims.
