Dennis Bergkamp has revealed he still has strong ambitions to own an English football club, having previously failed in his bid to buy Wycombe Wanderers and more recently Arsenal.

The Gunners legend has previously spoken passionately about his hopes of becoming an investor in a top professional club in England, but has failed twice before.

Widely regarded as one of the Premier League's greatest strikers ever, Bergkamp has outlined his plans to take control of a team in the EFL that he hopes to guide into the English top flight.

The Dutchman once came close to gaining control of Wycombe, while being backed by a collective of former players and teammates including Dirk Kuyt, Ronald Koeman and Henrik Larsson, before the deal fell through as the club preferred a other buyer.

However, their inspiration to become the owner of a team has remained, says Bergkamp Mirror that he hopes to buy a League One team.

'Wycombe Wanderers was a fun project, and we've come a long way with it. It wasn't until the end that things went wrong,” he said.

'We went to buy the shares together with Phillip Cocu, Ronald Koeman, Dirk Kuyt, Henrik Larsson and (agent) Rob Jansen.

'It is still a dream of mine to develop players, run an academy and use all our knowledge and experience to get promoted.

'Not with a foreign billionaire who invests a lot of money to move up quickly. If you have a group of former top footballers together, you simply start lower.

“I am convinced that with a club in League One, with real football knowledge, you can get promoted to the Championship within five, maximum ten years,” he added.

Bergkamp was recently involved in the group led by Spotify owner Daniel Ek that tried in vain to negotiate a buyout of his former club Arsenal.

Current owner Stan Kronke refused to sell the English giants two years ago and Bergkamp has no plans to try to invest in an elite club again.

'We are not talking about the Premier League. That's a very difficult league to get into. “I went to Arsenal with a number of other Arsenal legends, together with Daniel Ek, but nowadays you can hardly persuade the owner of such a big club to sell with the amounts required.”
