Denman earthquake, NSW: Magnitude 5.0 earthquake rocks the area on Australia’s east coast – with Sydney residents reporting tremors

  • Magnitude 5.0 earthquake hits Denman, NSW

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake has been reported near Denman, New South Wales. Australians living hours away in Sydney felt the tremors.

The earthquake was recorded by the scientific agency Geoscience Australia (GA).

Denman is located a three-hour drive northwest of Sydney and approximately 135km west of the city of Newcastle.

The Australian Meteorological Bureau reported on X that the earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat at Australia’s borders.

According to the GA website, the earthquake struck at a depth of 10 km and 14 km east of Denman.

Sydney residents reported feeling tremors. ‘My apartment just moved.. who else in Sydney felt it (earthquake)?!’, one wrote.

‘Was there just an earthquake in Sydney or did my building just shake for fun?!’

A third said: ‘I just felt a real earthquake in Sydney. The TV on the wall shook, as did the bed I was sitting on. Crazy!’

Residents of New South Wales living closer to the epicentre, in Mudgee and Gulgong (a two-hour drive west of Denman), reported walls and floors shaking.

“Dogs were barking… they were scared shitless,” someone posted.

Others further west near Dunedoo and someone at Anna Bay, north of Newcastle on the coast, also reported feeling tremors.

Residents of Newcastle’s suburbs also felt the earthquake.

‘Things on my table at Swansea Heads were rattling,’ said one. ‘It didn’t even occur to me that it was an earthquake.’

‘I thought my house was going to collapse… I live in Muswellbrook, we’ve had two aftershocks so far, the south side of town was without power,’ wrote someone else.

On X, Anna Edwards posted photos of cracks in the walls of her house caused by the earthquake.

‘Well, that was the first time I really felt an earthquake!! The house shook, the walls cracked. Wild!’

Lavis Mitre 10 in Muswellbrook posted a photo of items strewn across the aisles after the earthquake.

“Now that was epic, huh?!,” was the caption to the photo.
