Democrats now claim Republicans want to crash the economy so they can WIN in 2024

House Democrats insist their GOP counterparts are not negotiating in good faith and want the nation to default on $31 trillion in debt, believing it would help them electorally.

“Unfortunately, there are many in the Republican Party who want to crash the economy,” Pramila Jayapal, president of the Progressive Caucus, told reporters on Wednesday.

Some in the GOP want to “steer this country into chaos and catastrophe and think it might help their 2024 election prospects if the country is in chaos,” she continued.

Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed a similar sentiment.

“House Republicans are determined to crash the economy because they believe it will benefit them politically,” he told reporters.

Biden used the same talking point over the weekend, saying, “I think there are some MAGA Republicans in the House who know the damage it would do to the economy and because I’m president, and presidents are responsible for everything,” Biden would take the debt.’

“And that’s the only way to make sure Biden doesn’t get re-elected,” he continued.

Far-right members of the House GOP have warned House Leadership not to make a deal less conservative than the Limit, Save, Grow Act Republicans passed in April.

Progressives have fired similar warnings at President Biden’s team.

This is not the first time that debt ceiling negotiations have failed.

In 2011, Republicans used the impending default of the debt limit to also negotiate spending cuts. It was a parallel scenario where Democrats controlled the White House under President Obama and the Senate, while Republicans held power in the House.

With only 72 hours left, the Democrats and Republicans reached an agreement that raised the debt ceiling by $900 billion and cut spending by a similar amount.

“I think my conservative colleagues don’t feel we should negotiate with our hostage,” said Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., Tuesday to Reporters – Commentary Seized on Liberals.

Jeffries was also asked why the Democrats had not tried to raise the debt limit during the last Congress when they controlled the House, Senate and White House.

“It is my understanding that the Republicans in the Senate last December were unwilling to discuss this issue,” Jeffries said.

Most legislation needs 60 votes to pass the Senate β€” though Democrats could have tried to push through an increase through conciliation.

House Democrats, insisting that it is their Republican colleagues who want to avoid a deal, are pushing for two other ways to raise the country’s borrowing limit.

Jeffries managed to get the signatures of all 213 Democrats on a discharge request, and would need the signatures of five Republicans to get a majority and get a clean debt ceiling bill to the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, progressive Democrats have urged the president to invoke authority under the 14th Amendment β€” which says the validity of the national debt “shall not be questioned.”

Judiciary member Jerry Nadler told reporters that the 14th Amendment is “constitutionally a good way to go,” but that potential legal challenges would shake markets.

Meanwhile, Speaker Kevin McCarthy insists it’s not his fault if the US defaults on its debts within eight days, while the Treasury says the government has run out of money to pay its bills.

Every Democrat voted against raising the debt ceiling. Nothing happened in the Senate. I’m not a senator. I have no control over the Senate,” the speaker told reporters as negotiations dragged on for another day with no clear sign of progress.

β€œThe president β€” he hasn’t spoken to us for 97 days. So excuse me for reaching out to the Democrats, for begging the president to meet me.”

The Treasury Department has insisted that June 1 is the date by which a deal must be reached to prevent the economy from sliding into a global recession.

McCarthy claimed that Republicans have made “a lot of concessions,” claiming that limiting spending increases to one percent and strengthening job requirements for welfare programs like SNAP, TANF, and Medicare were “democratic ideas.”

β€œThat’s something Senator Biden voted for, that President Clinton signed into law. That was also an idea supported by the Democrats. So it’s not my fault that the Democrats have gone so extreme today, far into the socialist wing, that they are now against job demands. that they are now opposed to saving $1 less than we spent a year earlier.”
