Democrats hold their fire after Trump indictment

President Joe Biden’s administration declined to comment on the sensational news that Donald Trump has been indicted over a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels, while top Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi called for peace and calm.

The White House has consistently declined to comment on any of the Trump cases, pursuing the strategy of simply staying quiet and out of the way as the legal process progresses.

That came Thursday after the formal indictment was filed by a Grand Jury of Mahanttan and a White House official told DailyMail.com that the administration declined to comment on the matter.

Pelosi and Schumer, who were Trump’s best noires on Capitol Hill during his turbulent presidency, both released statements saying no one is above the law and calling for peace.

“The Grand Jury acted according to the facts and the law. No one is above the law and everyone has the right to a trial to prove their innocence. Hopefully the former president will peacefully respect the system that gives him that right,” Pelosi said.

Schumer noted that “a jury, not politicians” will decide Trump’s fate. Charges against the former president have yet to be revealed.

‘Mr. Trump is subject to the same laws as every American. He will be able to use the court system and a jury, not politics, to determine his fate according to the facts and the law. There must be no political influence, intimidation or outside interference in the matter. I encourage both Trump’s critics and supporters to conduct the process peacefully and within the law,” Schumer said in a statement.

President Joe Biden’s White House declined to comment on Trump’s charges

Trump has previously called for protests amid reports that an indictment would be imminent. He has warned of “death and destruction” if charged.

He has repeatedly attacked the justice system, claiming to be a victim of its weaponization — a line of attack many of his Republican supporters have repeated.

He continued that argument after news of his indictment broke, arguing that it would backfire on Biden.

“I believe this witch hunt will backfire enormously on Joe Biden,” he said in a statement. “The American people know exactly what the radical left Democrats are doing here. Everyone can see it.’

The former president is leading the polls to be the Republican nominee in next year’s presidential race. A new poll on Thursday showed he gained support as GOP voters showed sympathy for him.

However, many Democrats believe that Americans will not want to vote for him after he becomes the first ever former president to face criminal charges.

The Democratic National Committee, Biden’s political wing, said Democrats would hold Republicans “responsible” for their support of Trump and his agenda.

Whatever happens in Trump’s impending legal process, it is clear that the Republican Party remains firmly in the grip of Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans. We will continue to hold Trump and all Republican candidates accountable for the extreme MAGA agenda, including banning abortion, cutting Social Security and Medicare, and undermining free and fair elections,” DNC National Press Secretary Ammar Moussa said in a statement. a statement.

Most Democratic legislators simply responded with a version of “no one is above the law” after news of the indictment broke.

California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, who is running for the Senate, said everyone should be held accountable.

“The charges against a former president are unprecedented. But so is the illegal conduct Trump is engaging in. A nation of laws must hold the rich and powerful accountable, even if they are in high office. Especially when they do. To do otherwise is not democracy,” he wrote on Twitter.

Schiff led the Democrats’ case during Trump’s first impeachment trial. The then president was approved by the Senate.

And Democratic Representative Dan Goldman, who worked for Schiff and helped prosecute Trump during his first impeachment trial, called for calm.

As the process progresses, every elected official across the ideological spectrum must make it unequivocally clear that there is no room for political violence or interference. Donald Trump’s defense must take place in court, not in the halls of Congress or in the political sphere,” he said.

Democratic Representative Maxine Waters, who tangled with Trump during his presidency, was more cheerful.

So Trump is finally indicted! I predicted he would and I predicted Stormy Daniels would get him! Sometimes justice works!” she tweeted.

And California Rep. Eric Swalwell tweeted, “The indictment of a former president is a sad day for America. It is also a time to put faith in our justice system. Donald Trump deserves all the protections the Constitution affords him. As that unfolds, let’s not celebrate or destroy. Justice benefits us all.”
