Democrats claim Joe Biden is as ‘sharp as ever’ and back the ‘incredible’ 81-year-old president despite damning report questioning his mental acuity

Senate Democrats are backing President Joe Biden in an effort to downplay growing concerns about his age and mental acuity.

The 81-year-old president’s competency was called into question last week in a damning report from special counsel Robert Hur. He claimed that during the investigation into Biden’s mishandling of classified documents, it was clear that the president has a “poor memory” and “diminished capabilities.”

Biden was described as “a likable, well-meaning, older man” who could not remember when he was vice president or even the date his own son Beau died.

Biden immediately pushed back on the damning claims to buy Hur, saying his “memory is fine.”

But to make matters worse, even voters are concerned. A recent poll found that 86 percent of Americans think Biden is “too old” to run for a second term.

When pressed by DailyMail.com on the report’s findings and its characterization of the president’s mental fitness, Democrats dismissed their concerns.

Democrat Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut told DailyMail.com that Biden is “as sharp as ever.”

“The president is doing a fantastic job and I look forward to ensuring he is re-elected in 2024,” added Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga.

Another Democrat Elizabeth Warren agreed and said. “I know his ability to do the job because he does the job. He delivers for the American people every day.”

Republicans, meanwhile, said largely the opposite.

“I said before he was elected that he is unfit for office,” Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., told DailyMail.com. “It’s been clear for years.”

“It’s kind of sad that it takes a special counsel to point out the obvious, but I’m glad the special counsel did that,” he added.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, who is nearly a decade older than Biden, wanted to delay judgment until he could “make a personal observation” of the president’s mental acuity.

But he added: “I haven’t had a face-to-face conversation with him in three years.”

Several GOP members expressed concern about how the report indicated the president was unlikely to be indicted because of his mental strength.

“Either (Biden) committed a crime and he should be prosecuted for it, or he doesn’t have the mental acuity to stand trial, in which case he doesn’t have the acuity to be president,” Senator JD Vance told DailyMail.com .

“The report was very damning,” he continued.

Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri told DailyMail.com: “The idea that he is mentally unfit to stand trial should concern Americans.”

“His inability to remember when he was vice president is certainly of great concern,” he continued.

Biden joked about his age during a speech in Washington, DC, on Monday.

“I know it doesn’t look like it, but I’ve been there for a while,” the president said during a speech to the National Association of Counties.

“I remember that,” the 81-year-old Biden added. The crowd of local officials laughed and cheered.

Last week, several members of Congress called on Cabinet officials to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Biden from office.

Rep. Claudia Tenney, RN.Y., even wrote a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland calling on him to initiate proceedings regarding the 25th Amendment.

The 25th Amendment, which outlines presidential succession, gives the vice president and the Cabinet the power to remove the commander in chief from office through a majority vote if it is determined that he or she is no longer fit for office.

It has never been used in American history.
